This week, the Advanced Chemistry classes deepened their understanding of matter by participating in a POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) activity.

POGIL is a student-centered teaching method where students work in small teams, with the instructor serving as a facilitator rather than a lecturer. These teams engage in specially designed activities that follow a learning cycle, helping students build knowledge through inquiry and exploration. Each POGIL activity has three key features:
  1. It promotes self-managed teams, with the instructor guiding rather than delivering information.
  2. It leads students through a structured exploration to help them develop their own understanding.
  3. It uses content to enhance key process skills, such as critical thinking and applying knowledge in new contexts.
In this particular POGIL activity, students explored the Classification of Matter, investigating the distinctions between pure substances and mixtures, as well as the differences among elements, compounds, and mixtures.
